Being from South Africa, I can truly say that our country has seen the effects of HIV/AIDS, since we have one of the worst infection rates in the world. So that is what you would’ve noticed the little red banner on the top-righthand corner of The Cool Crowd in support of World AIDS Day 2006, which is taking place on 1 December.
Dealing with HIV/AIDS is all about the mindset of individuals and this is evident since the stigma of having and living with AIDS is one of the biggest threats to actually conquering it. Although I’m not going to pretend to be an expert who has researched all facts, I do follow local news and the stories and facts are shocking. I’m also not pretending to be a martyr or activist by publishing a banner on my blog (which is widely published by many other websites), but I am at least taking a stance and I am involved in the struggle - if only in my limited, digital way.
It’s easy for me, as a upper-middle class citizen to be apathetic towards the epidemic and it’s easy to say that it will never affect me. And the truth is, it probably never will affect me directly, but with people suffering all around us, obviously I’m suffering in a way as well. And hence my little support…
