What next?

For the past 7 years reality tv has dominated the tube bringing with it an array of different shows including Survivor, Big Brother and Idols.

At first we were in awe of this new trend of tv realism, watching ‘real’ people in not so real situations without the glamour of scripts, make-up or special effects. But after almost 10 years these types of shows, is there anything left to see?

We’ve seen a wig mad real estate tycoon make and break the careers of the power hungry, two blonde bimbo heiresses run amok, wannabe singers, exhibitionist house-mates, money hungry island refugees etc. We’ve seen everything, right? Wrong.

A television network in The Netherlands is planning a new first - a dating programme for the visibly disfigured.
The broadcaster SBS 6 is seeking candidates for its Love at Second Sight show due to be launched on February 20 of this year. According to SBS 6 the aim of the programme is to remove prejudice about these people, to create more acceptance and respect and, of course, to find the love of their lives.

But the majority of Dutch viewers are turned off by the show that was initially set to be called Monster Love. A poll by the mass circulation De Telegraaf daily showed 85% do not like the idea, with only 9% in favour.

I think I agree with the Dutch masses. Yes, the show might want to address certain prejudice, but putting a group of handicapped people on tv just to create a new kind of reality show, to me is just sad.
