Consumer Reports Best Skin Care

Whilst sensitive skin care is nothing new, the number of people that seem to be suffering is on the increase. Sensitive skin is defined as skin that cannot cope with the effects of the environment or other conditions like certain materials or products that irritate it and can cause redness and sometimes swelling. Skin care products that can stop this problem or reduce the effects of it are called sensitive skin care products and labeled as such in stores.

The degree of sensitivity can however vary from person to person and depending on that, the type of skin care procedures may vary too. What is know however, is that almost everyone that has hyper-sensitive skin will have a reaction to any type of detergent and other cleaning products.

Even though we can all experience skin damage from our environment and products we use it is often down to the individual tolerance of the person affected. This tolerance level is very low for sensitive skin types, leading to the skin becoming damaged very easily and quickly.

A few tips for choosing the right sensitive skin care products are suggested below, these are products which where possible avoid known skin irritants or reduce them to the lowest concentration possible. It may seem obvious, as most skin care products are formulated to help protect the skin, but only use products that are actually marked for sensitive skin use and if you are unsure, check the ingredients listing to see if there are any specific warnings you should be aware of.

Just to be sure, when you choose the products you require just buy the ones with the least number of additives and preservatives available. Wherever possible, avoid any type of cleanser or toner as they are almost invariably alcohol based.

The procedure if washing is to be done is protect your hands with rubber of other type of protective hand wear as detergents are one of the biggest skin irritants. A further problem is often caused buy the sun, so use special sunscreen if you intend to spend time in the sun.

Dust and other atmospheric pollution can also be a problem so it is advisable to put some form of barrier or moisturizing cream on (even if it isn’t sunny), or a hypoallergenic moisturizer will do if you can’t find a specific sensitive skin care product. Use soap-free and alcohol free cleansers and cleanse your face whenever you return from spending time out doors but do not scrub or exfoliate too hard as it can cause reddishness and even inflammation.

For women that wear makeup, it is recommended that it not be worn for too long and that once again only hypoallergenic skin care products are used. Sensitive skin does not have to mean that you become a hermit as there are numerous products available to help you, it just takes a change in the way you carry out your everyday life, that’s all.
