One thing that must be said about Google, is that although they sometimes conform, they still come up with some pretty innovative ideas and they have the scientists / programmers backing up the reality and realization of those ideas. Another fact is that Google has revolutionized Internet search.
Their latest “experiment” (available at Google Labs) is Google Accessible Search. Basicly what this BETA version will do, is along with Google’s other search algorithms, the search results will also be based on the layout of the pages concerned. The idea is that pages that display the information more clearly, will get a better ranking. This might not be a bad idea, since a lot of websites are very ill-designed and cluttered with useless junk, but still contain some valuable information.
The search will consider HTML mark-up and also other scenarios, such as whether the page will still be displayed properly without images.
Don’t if this will be incorporated into their main search function once it passes BETA, but if it works as well as it sounds, it might well be worth the trouble and investment.
