Growing Thyme in Your Garden

I don’t know, but I don’t feel you can officially call yourself an herb gardener unless you’ve got some thyme growing there.  It’s one of the most necessary and useful herbs around.  It doesn’t hurt that there are more than 100 unique varieties with tempting flavors and aromas.

Regardless of which variety of thyme you choose, they all have a woody, twig like stem and little oval-shaped leaves.  In early summer or late spring, based on your climate, your herb will blossom with tiny pink, lavender or pale white colored blooms.

One of my first herb gardens was in the middle of a clay field and it was not easy to get anything to grow right. Soil and sun are probably the biggest things to consider when growing herb plants. Without the right amounts of both natural light and water, your garden won’t grow. With the right combination of water, earth and light, you can grow just about anything.

Rather than trying to fix the soil issues, I changed my garden plan and learned about rock gardening, which uses rocks and only a thin layer of good soil.

A rock garden is about the positive features that you may have in your garden already or those that you want to add. With good drainage, adequate light and all the nooks and crannies around the rocks where roots can dig in, rock gardens may be just the thing for you to experiment with.

When planning your herb garden, be sure that you are choosing herbs that can stay compact, because with limited room you do not want anything taking over. • Wild Oregano: Even though this perennial hails from the warm climate of the Mediterranean Sea, it should grow to about 30 inches tall in your herb garden. You can cook with its green oval leaves and be sure to take full, deep breaths of its wonderful scent. You will also love the purple flowers, which should bloom in August. This isn’t the same kind of oregano that you find in Italian dishes, but you can eat it.

• Marjoram: It is awesome when you can sculpt a beautiful rock garden using culinary herb plants like Marjoram. Its oval gray-green leaves have a sweet scent that will remind you of your favorite Italian sauce and its tiny white flowers can bring a smile to your face. Keep it snipped back so that it will stay lovely and full and do not forget that it appreciates full sun and good drainage.

• Thyme: The shiny, small leaves of the thyme herb are clustered along woody stems that are adorned with many white or pink flowers and grows to a height of up to a foot. It appreciates the sandy soils that provide well-drainage and full light. Thyme has a tendency to grow wild, so keep it snipped back to maintain its compact shape.

Part of the beauty of rock gardens is the contrast of the hard rocks and the soft herbs. The differentiation in colors also helps in achieving a sense of the brilliant.
