Miss Benning was a health instructor at the most popular co-ed high school in the county. Even though she had been teaching for only three of four years, she had already achieved a reputation as an educator with instructional approaches that motivated and encouraged the students in her class to learn and to think.
For example, one Thursday afternoon at 1:00 she addressed the students in her class and stated the following: “For the next week we are going to learn about some basic alcoholism facts from a general viewpoint and we are also going to learn about some of the best known signs of alcoholism from a less general and more detailed point of view.”
“Not all of these alcoholism signs will unquestionably confirm that a drinker with a drinking problem is an alcoholic, but the more signs that a drinker displays, the greater the possibility that he or she is an individual who is alcohol dependent.”
Miss Benning then explained to the the students that each pupil would be held responsible for researching four alcoholism signs and then presenting his or her results to the other members in the class via a seven minute oral presentation.
The Pupils are Wound Up About Giving A Comprehensive Presentation to Their Fellow Students About The Signs of Alcohol Addiction
After learning about the various signs of alcohol addiction for quite a few days, the time had finally come for the student presentations. It was instantly apparent that her pupils were keyed up about the subject matter because the material that they presented was extraordinary. To say that Miss Benning was pleasantly surprised with the fervor manifested by the pupils in her class concerning this subject matter was an understatement.
The day after all of the pupils completed their presentations, Miss Benning passed out a piece of paper with a list of all the alcoholism signs that were presented and discussed in class and in the presentations. Miss Benning then asked her pupils to study the list and rank the top five alcohol dependency signs that were most indicative of alcoholism. After approximately fifteen minutes, Miss Benning collected the pieces of paper and informed the students in her class that after she evaluates the results, she will discuss her findings the next school day.
There was some real excitement by the pupils while they were exiting Miss Benning’s classroom. One could swear that her students couldn’t wait for the next day to come so that they could learn about the results of their in-class research.
The Students Match Their Results Against the Assessments From A Board of Alcohol Dependency Specialists
When the next school day came, Miss Benning gave out a sheet of paper that listed the top three alcohol dependency signs according to the pupils’ rankings. To the left of these results, she included another column that was labeled “experts’ answer.” She then informed her pupils that the numbers in the second column she added stood for the findings that were announced by a panel of alcoholism experts.
Miss Benning told the students in her class to look over the information she passed out and then to raise their hand if they had any issues, questions, or concerns. Within 40 or 50 seconds, virtually every pupil in the class raised his or her hand. It was evident that the pupils had some questions, issues, or concerns about their results versus the answers given by the authorities. For instance, virtually every pupil had an issue with the highest ranked answer given by the authorities, that is, “Do you feel really sick when you stop drinking?”
The Major Difference Between Alcohol Abuse and Alcohol Addiction is the Physical Dependency That is Experienced With Alcohol Addiction and Not With Alcohol Abuse
Miss Benning then explained to the pupils in her classroom why this answer was the most unambiguous sign of alcohol dependency. She highlighted the fact that the most important difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency is the physical dependency that is experienced with alcohol dependency and not with alcohol abuse.
In essence this means that when an individual who is addicted to alcohol suddenly quits drinking, he or she will suffer through alcohol withdrawal symptoms.
Miss Benning then told the pupils in her classroom that alcohol withdrawal symptoms are responses by the brain and by the body to the deprivation of alcohol to which they had become acclimated. Stated differently, alcohol withdrawal symptoms are signals from the body and from the brain telling a person who is addicted to alcohol that something is very wrong and needs to be fixed. These messages consist of a number of dangerous, painful, and uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms that can potentially result in a fatality if the appropriate treatment is not immediately undertaken.
Miss Benning then discussed the many diverse alcohol withdrawal symptoms that can be gone through when a person who is addicted to alcohol suddenly stops drinking.
The fact that Miss Benning tried to emphasize was this: an individual who engages in alcohol abuse can experience almost any and every one of the alcohol dependency signs that the students had ranked, but the one sign or symptom that few, if any, alcohol abusers ever experience is alcohol withdrawal symptoms.
To explain this as plainly as possible, Miss Benning stressed the point that alcohol abusers, unlike individuals who are alcohol dependent, are not alcohol dependent and consequently, when they quit drinking, they almost never go through alcohol withdrawal symptoms.
The Students Believe They Have Uncovered An Irregularity With the Findings From The Board of Drug and Alcohol Abuse Specialists
The pupils also disagreed with the second ranked answer given by the alcohol addiction specialists, that is, “Have you ever had a drink the first thing in the morning to get rid of a hangover or to steady your nerves?”
Miss Benning informed her students that this sign does not necessarily suggest that the problem is alcoholism, but that it does underscore the need that alcohol dependent people have to drink in order to keep away from alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

I work with several young men who work in construction who exhibit excessive drinking. Indeed, these construction workers, not unlike others who involve themselves hazardous and irresponsible drinking, need to look at their behavior and make a truthful evaluation of what irresponsible and abusive drinking is doing to their mental health, to their finances, to their jobs, to their relationships, and to their health. In short, these construction workers need to realize the alcohol side effects of their hazardous and irresponsible drinking.
There’s Room For Optimism If Those Who Engage in Abusive and Hazardous Drinking Can Become Encouraged to Get the Alcohol Rehab and Alcohol Detox They Require
These hard working guys need to get enthused and motivated about wanting to make a constructive change in their lives. In other words, my hard working pals need to get motivated to go to their family physician or to the local drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility and discover whether or not they are basically abusing alcohol or if they are addicted to alcohol. Based on their findings, my hard working buddies then need to get the alcohol detox treatment and the alcohol rehab they need.
The fortunate news is that there are is an almost countless number of hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, treatment centers, rehab programs, and drug and alcohol treatment clinics where these construction workers can get top-shelf therapy for their hazardous and irresponsible drinking. Unlike his other work positions, as the purchasing manager he over and over again took potential vendors and existing vendors to lunch and to a variety of sporting events.
Though it was not written in concrete, meeting with potential vendors and existing vendors constantly involved situations in which alcohol was present. In truth, over the past year, Stanley had started to appreciably increase his work related and his social drinking. This has led to a dilemma. Namely, the more successful he became as a purchasing agent, the more he began to drink.
His Increasing Bouts of Depression Also Made Him Wonder if He Was Becoming Alcohol Dependent
In fact, it didn’t take long at all before Stanley’s irresponsible and careless drinking started to negatively affect his work efficiency, the money in his savings account, his health, his relationships, and his mental health. After many weeks of excessive drinking, Stanley, in point of fact, started to be anxious about his hazardous and careless drinking and questioned if his alcohol related problems were alcoholism signs. Every so often, Stanley missed drinking, but the better work performance, health, finances, and the better relationships he experienced more than made up for his love of drinking.

In a similar way, many, if not most heavy drinkers in the long run suffer from alcohol related health problems such as sleep disturbances, hangovers, alcohol poisoning, and a loss of energy. Other alcohol induced medical problems include the following: vitamin deficiency, stomach ulcers, sexual problems, nerve damage, and liver disease.
Furthermore, many, if not most people who engage in alcohol abuse in the end go through alcohol related financial problems. Ironically, while numerous problem drinkers whine about their financial problems, they often make their financial circumstances even worse by spending more of their money to support their drinking habit.
In a similar way, abusive and heavy drinking regularly results in anger management, time management, and stress management difficulties. Not only this but, many, if not most people who engage in alcohol abuse, because of their heavy and irresponsible drinking, in the long run exhibit employment problems such as poor performance evaluations, showing up late for work, absenteeism, making mistakes on the job, and alcohol related accidents.
Additionally, excessive and irresponsible drinking eventually results in different mental health problems such as obsession, anxiety, denial, depression, and extreme mood swings. And finally, it should come as no shock that people who involve themselves in alcohol abuse can get a “drunk while driving arrest” virtually any night or day of the week due to their hazardous drinking and driving.
The Moral of the Story
The bottom line is this: people who involve themselves in irresponsible and excessive drinking need to learn how to drink in moderation and responsibly or get the alcohol detox and the alcohol rehab they require. This is significant for people who involve themselves in abusive drinking so that they can either drink responsibly and in moderation or begin to lead an alcohol free life and avoid the huge amount of alcohol related issues stated above. Plainly, obtaining professional alcohol abuse help will be important along these lines.
It is also relevant for individuals who engage in hazardous drinking to either learn how to drink responsibly and in moderation or quit drinking so that they can stay away from a life of alcoholism. In sum, people who involve themselves in excessive drinking need to abstain from irresponsible and abusive drinking so that they can stay away from the alcohol induced silent killers that are associated with abusive and hazardous drinking. Again, getting exceptional alcohol abuse rehab will clearly go a long way toward reaching this goal.

Don’t Turn Your Back on a Mess at Night
Don’t head out the door in the evening without taking a short amount of time to straighten your desk. Gather your office supplies up and place them together on your desktop so they are ready to go when you return. Check the trash can and empty it if necessary, and remove any empty cups or other dishes that are cluttering your desk.
The most critical part of this step is to gather your paperwork into a rough order of how you want to handle it the next day. This is also the perfect opportunity to jot down a to-do list for tomorrow, and rank each item as to importance.
The ten minutes these simple tasks take each night will be rewarded by your ability to jump in and start the day running each morning.
Organize Work Product Using the Rule of 3
There are those people with organization stamped on their forehead who never waste time looking for what they need to complete a task. Then, there are the rest of us. I have found the best way to organize my working papers so that I can actually find something when I need it is to use the rule of 3.
The idea is simple. Never have more than three piles of paperwork going at any given time. The first stack contains the most pressing items you hope to accomplish within the day. The second stack should hold those that need to be handled within the week, and finally those within the month. This can be a painful upfront process, but by taking the time to create these three stacks, you will save time in the long run from digging through piles when you are in a hurry and need some critical paper fast.
Take Action
The bottom line is that you are losing opportunities for your small business every day that you wait to find an organization system you can work with. A larger part of your day can be spent on making your small business succeed when you are organized. And keep in mind, what works for one person is a disaster for another. Having a low sense of self worth can make living in this world very difficult. You can’t really find your place when you don’t really feel like you have the right to belong somewhere. Being your own shadow is a tiring task. Learning to step aside and become your own cheerleader can be a difficult but worthwhile path. Your potential rests where you choose to set it.
It’s so easy to look at the little things and use them as evidence that we are not cool enough or smart enough. We hear a negative reaction to the idea of dog clothing and we shrink inside because we know put a sweater on our dog just this morning. It’s frustrating to be derailed so easily.
Instead of kicking around the overflow of home office storage, try cleaning the space up and setting yourself up for the most success possible in this one little room. Of course you probably want to start by setting a goal that is highly attainable. Setting yourself up for success is not the same thing as setting low standards. Once you reach the first goal, the next goal elevates your expectations.
Let’s talk about risk. Instead of talking yourself out of fulfilling a lifelong dream, take the time to answer the electric guitar for sale ad you found. Step outside of yourself and realize that you can try something and it is Okay if it doesn’t pan out perfectly. Sometimes elevating your sense of self is learning that not doing so well isn’t going to harm you. It doesn’t have to mean you are not good enough.
The same applies to being social as well as your interactions at work. You are going to make mistakes and say the wrong thing sometimes. You are going to realize that you aren’t the coolest one in the office and that’s Okay.
Your reaction to yourself matters more. Can you see how you made a mistake but you can fix it? Can you see how you don’t have to relive the mistake over and over to make sure you feel really bad about it?
When you hide your potential even from yourself you rob your mind the chance to grow. In fact, you rob yourself the chance to learn, experience, and stretch into a better you just by making sure the world can’t see you. Little steps can lead you out of your own fire.

Of course, for many people, working out and keeping as fit as possible forms a massive part of their working life. Look at athletes, for example. They will all — in one form or another — get certain exercises and workouts that will help them to get to the top of their field in whatever they are trying to achieve and in whatever sport they are playing. Developing lean muscle growth is a great way to improve your sporting ability.
In much the same way, other professions around the world require you to be fit and healthy as well. The main example you might think of would be the armed services where all military personal are required to stay fit to a greater or lesser extent.
Another common reason is, of course, for personal satisfaction. People like to feel good about themselves and they like to look good. When you get up in the morning and look in the mirror, would you prefer to see someone in shape looking back at you or not? Tbe answer is simple. In much the same way, people also do this in order to attract a mate and look as attractive as they can be to the opposite sex.
These are a few reasons why people like to work out and stay fit. If you are ever struggling, then the best thing to do is to get yourself a personal trainer.

On an annual basis, how many alcoholics fail to get the professional alcohol treatment they require? How many people die each year from a condition that is 100% preventable, such as alcohol poisoning? How many individuals are the victims of alcohol related crime or violence each and every year? How many individuals get injured or lose their lives in alcohol related traffic accidents every year? How many people face serious consequences in their lives because they received a “drunk driving” conviction? How many junior high, high school, and college students lose their lives every year due to an alcohol overdose? How many children are born each year with fetal alcohol syndrome? How many people’s lives are cut short due to hazardous and irresponsible drinking? How many individuals lose their lives every year because of drinking problems?
Why Would Anyone Want to Drink in an Excessive and Abusive Manner?
So what’s the point in asking these questions? Basically to highlight the devastating and destructive nature of abusive and unhealthy drinking. Indeed, and based on the above questions, I wonder why anyone would choose to drink in a hazardous and abusive manner.
Stated more forcefully, with the host of health issues, employment difficulties, legal proceedings, financial problems, and relationship dilemmas that are linked to alcoholism and chronic alcohol abuse, why would any person with good reasoning skills want to drink in a hazardous and abusive manner? If truth be told when some of the above topics are put under the microscope more closely, abusive drinking becomes more illogical and makes even less sense.
Wouldn’t you think that alcoholics would be able to see some of the alcohol symptoms that they display? In a similar way doesn’t it seem reasonable to think that many more families would involve themselves in an alcohol intervention for the individual in the household who is an alcoholic or an alcohol abuser? What is more, wouldn’t you think that people who drink abusively would try to learn more about their drinking behavior by reading about various alcohol related statistics?
After reviewing the alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse research findings, the point is so important that it needs to be stated again: With all of the dangerous and disastrous outcomes that are directly or indirectly correlated with continuous and repetitive alcoholism and alcohol abuse, why would any individual want to engage in abusive drinking?
What Can be Done About the Widespread Nature of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism in the U.S.?
So what can be done about the pervasive nature of alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency in the United States?
- Our students need more meaningful and more relevant preventative and educational methods and approaches so that more students at all grade levels, including those at college, are “reached.
- In a similar manner, our students need to learn how to become problem solvers in life rather than resorting to the ”quick fix” and the “instant gratification” of a drug or alcohol abuse ”high” or “buzz”.
- People who are alcohol abusers or alcohol addicts need to look look at themselves honestly and ask why they are not getting the professional alcohol rehab they need.
- Society needs to get the message to more individuals about the damaging and destructive effects of careless and excessive drinking.
There’s Room For Hope if Those Who Engage in Hazardous and Excessive Drinking Can Become Motivated to Get the Alcohol Treatment They Require
There’s a lot of room for optimism and hope if people can start drinking responsibly and those who engage in continuous and repeated drinkingcan become motivated to get the alcohol treatment they need. Indeed, why put your loved ones through suffering, turmoil, and pain because of your excessive drinking when you have the power to control your life by drinking responsibly or even refraining from drinking if you can’t control your drinking behavior?

There are two types of people in the world. First you have those who were born with the organization gene; second are those who were not. Are you part of the second group of people? It’s okay! You can still keep your small business organized.
The benefits are many. A person who can organized their business will find the work gets done in much less time. They forget important events less. They feel less stressed and out of control. Below are some functional tips to keep your business organized for those of us that are organizationally challenged:
Don’t Turn Your Back on a Mess at Night
Never leave your workspace at night until you have taken a few minutes to clean up your desk. Gather your pens, stapler, and other tools together so you can find them in the morning. Check the trash can and empty it if necessary, and remove any empty cups or other dishes that are cluttering your desk.
Most important, quickly go through the papers cluttering up the desk and stack them somewhat in the order they need to be tackled in the morning. This is also the perfect opportunity to jot down a to-do list for tomorrow, and rank each item as to importance.
You will find that this simple 10 minute process each evening will fire you up to jump in feet first the next day to complete what needs to be done.
Use the Rule of 3 to Group Work Product
There will always be those people who know right where everything they need is at any time. The rest of us make up the bigger population. I have found the best way to organize my working papers so that I can actually find something when I need it is to use the rule of 3.
The idea is simple. Never have more than three piles of paperwork going at any given time. The first stack is your most pressing business that you hope to get through during the day. Next, are those items to accomplish sometime during the week, and the final stack contains those less pressing items to get to within the month. This may take a few minutes to create the first time, but in the long run it will save you ton of time from having to look through every paper on your desk for the one that you really need.
Take Action
The reality is that each day you avoid creating an organization system that you can live with you miss opportunities for your small business. A larger part of your day can be spent on making your small business succeed when you are organized. And keep in mind, what works for one person is a disaster for another. So find a system you can call your own and stick with it.
